Job Summary:

The Communications Compliance Specialist will support a six-month initiative at the Indiana Department of Health to ensure state health forms, digital content, and web pages comply with Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) Level AA standards. This role involves reviewing, revising, and coordinating accessibility improvements to public-facing materials, working closely with internal teams to enhance usability for all residents.

Responsibilities:

• Review state health forms, documents, and web content for WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance.
• Collaborate with program areas to revise and redesign materials to meet accessibility requirements including plain language, document structure, color contrast, and alternative text.
• Partner with web teams to ensure HTML content, PDFs, and interactive elements are accessible and remediated properly.
• Utilize project tracking and accessibility checker tools to monitor progress and ensure timely completion of deliverables.
• Provide guidance, training, and best practice recommendations for content creation and publishing staff.
• Conduct quality assurance reviews to verify accessibility corrections.
• Prepare documentation and reports on compliance improvements, outstanding issues, and recommendations for long-term accessibility practices.
• Stay current with accessibility standards, state requirements, and industry best practices.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Strong understanding of accessible digital communication principles including document tagging, semantic structure, and screen reader compatibility.
• Proficiency in Word, Adobe Acrobat, and other relevant platforms with strong problem-solving skills.
• Excellent writing and editing skills with the ability to create clear, plain language content.
• Experience coordinating projects, managing multiple deadlines, and collaborating across teams.
• Strong attention to detail.
• Minimum 2 years experience in technical writing, digital communications, or web content.
• Minimum 2 years experience with WCAG 2.1 Level AA compliance and accessibility tools such as WAVE or Axe.
• Minimum 2 years experience with plain language content creation.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Proficiency with accessibility tools like Adobe Acrobat accessibility features, WAVE, Axe, or similar.
• Experience working in government, public health, or regulated environments.
• Familiarity with content management systems and web publishing workflows.
• Experience evaluating and remediating content for WCAG 2.1 compliance.
• Accessibility certification such as CPACC or WAS.
• Experience with project tracking and progress monitoring tools.

Special Considerations:

• Absences greater than two weeks must be approved in advance with contact information provided during absence.
• Candidate must agree to hourly pay rate with a 25% provider markup.
• Initial interview will be conducted via Teams; second interviews require in-person attendance.
• Position is hybrid: 3 days in office, 2 days remote.
• Position duration is anticipated to be six months.

Scheduling:

• Hybrid work schedule with three days in office and two days remote per week.
• Engagement duration from September 7, 2026 to December 31, 2026.
